Best for: Northern Lights hunters, design lovers, wellness travelers, and anyone who likes their snow with a sauna nearby
Best time to visit: Winter, when the nights are long and dark enough for the aurora. Late November and December add the Christmas markets.
Fly into: Bodø or Luleå for the hotels in this guide. Oslo or Bergen for a stay before or after a Norway cruise.
Don’t miss: Husky sledding through evergreen forest, a proper Nordic sauna, a Christmas market, and at least one night above the Arctic Circle
Book with a travel advisor: Exclusive advisor benefits where available, plus every excursion and transfer handled for you
If your idea of a perfect winter escape includes snow-dusted landscapes, simmering saunas, and long nights outdoors under a very big sky, I suggest heading north. A Nordic winter vacation might be exactly what you have been missing.
Everyone travels up here hoping to catch the aurora borealis. But there is so much more to the region than the dancing Northern Lights.
Winter is prime time in the Nordics. Husky sledding through evergreen forests. Bustling Christmas markets. Hygge nights by a wood-burning fireplace. And a sauna culture so serious that wellness junkies will feel right at home. They are called Finnish saunas, after all.
So this winter, let me plan your trip north. If you are not sure where to start, let these four picks on my radar be your guide, each one matched to a different kind of traveler.

If seeing the Northern Lights is non-negotiable, HX Expeditions is the line I would look at first, especially the eight-day Ultimate Norway: Arctic Expedition under the Northern Lights sailing. It comes with a coveted promise. At the time of writing, if there are no confirmed aurora sightings during your voyage, you receive up to $1,300 per person in credit toward a future HX sailing. I will confirm the current terms when we book.
That said, your odds are very good. The voyage spends several long nights above the Arctic Circle, far from light pollution, and the crew announces sightings as they appear. Keep your parka by the door.
By day, you can try a variety of excursions, from expedition kayaking around the fjords to Zodiac cruising. Snowshoeing is on the menu too.
Why go: The aurora is the whole point of your trip, and you like having a backup plan if the sky does not cooperate. Best for Northern Lights hunters.

For a deeper dive into Norwegian life, Hurtigruten is on my radar. The company has been sailing this coast for more than a century, and its smaller ships are nimble enough to navigate the narrow fjords and Norway’s spectacular coastline.
Hurtigruten is proud of its Nordic heritage, and it shows at the table. Its onboard restaurants source ingredients from about 70 local farms and purveyors, so dinner doubles as a lesson in the region. Think locally farmed Sterling White Halibut and award-winning local cheeses.
It is a strong pick for active travelers. Excursions include king crab fishing and nighttime snowmobiling under the Northern Lights. In between, you can explore small fishing villages and learn about Viking rituals. Want to see more of Norway? I can also book you a pre- or post-cruise stay in Oslo or Bergen.
Why go: You want the culture and the food as much as the scenery. Best for curious, active travelers.

If you would rather see the Norwegian landscape from land, let’s plan a stay at Wood Hotel Bodø, perched above the Arctic Circle. It is about 10 minutes from Bodø Airport and seven minutes from the city center, yet the hotel feels like part of the landscape.
It is built almost entirely from spruce and pine. The lamps are hand-blown at a historic glassworks near Oslo. The carpets are made from recycled and repurposed fishing nets. Even the fireplace is Norwegian soapstone and slate. Design people, this one is for you.
Design aside, the hotel is a destination in its own right. The rooftop wellness space has a sauna and a pool, both with city views. The loungers in the relaxation room were made for an afternoon nap, and the gym doubles as an observation deck for the surrounding peaks.
Prefer to break a sweat outside? You can borrow hiking gear from the hotel, including walking sticks, backpacks, and headlamps. Or I can arrange winter excursions for you, such as guided snowshoeing in the nearby forest.
Why stay: You want the Arctic on your doorstep and an easy airport transfer at the end of the day. Best for design lovers and active travelers.

About an hour’s drive northwest of Luleå Airport, you will find one of Sweden’s most original hotels: Arctic Bath.
In summer, the hotel floats on the Lule River, and come winter, the river freezes around it. The outdoor cold plunge is ringed by a wall of timber, and the Swedish dry sauna is as much a cultural ritual as it is a wellness rite.
The modern land suite cabins are the ones I have my eye on. Each comes with a lofted bedroom reached by a spiral staircase, a private deck, and a wall of windows framing the pristine scenery.
It is also a great launchpad if you want to go deeper into Sweden’s snowy landscape. During your stay, I can arrange off-site excursions like a husky-led sled tour and cross-country skiing, plus a meet-and-greet with a reindeer herder.
Why stay: Wellness is the reason for the trip, and you want a setting that matches the ritual. Best for couples and wellness travelers.
For the Northern Lights, you want long, dark nights, which in Arctic Norway and Sweden means roughly late September through March. If Christmas markets are part of the dream, aim for late November or December. Holiday weeks fill quickly, so the earlier we start, the better.
No one can promise the sky, and I would never tell you otherwise. What you can do is stack the odds. Several long nights above the Arctic Circle help, and some sailings, like HX’s Northern Lights voyage, have offered future cruise credit if there are no confirmed sightings. I will walk you through the current terms before you book.
A cruise suits you if you want to see a long stretch of coastline with excursions built in. A hotel stay suits you if you would rather settle in, sauna daily, and head out on excursions at your own pace. You can also combine the two, with a few nights on land before or after your sailing.
Wood Hotel Bodø is about 10 minutes from Bodø Airport. Arctic Bath is about an hour’s drive northwest of Luleå Airport. I handle the flights and transfers so the travel day feels as smooth as the stay.
